Modelling and optimization of a flexible hydrogen-fueled pressurized PEMFC power plant for grid balancing purposes

In a scenario characterized by an increasing penetration of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources and the need fast-ramping grid-balancing power plants, EU project GRASSHOPPER aims to setup demonstrate highly flexible PEMFC Power Plant, hydrogen fueled scalable MW-size, designed provide grid support. this work, different layouts proposed for innovative MW-scale plant are simulated optimize design off-design operation. The simulation model details main BoP components performances includes customized model, validated through dedicated experiments. system may operate at atmospheric or mild pressurized conditions: pressurization 0.7 barg allows significantly higher net efficiency, despite consumptions. additional recovery from cathode exhaust with expander gives adding up 2%pt reaching values between 47%LHV 55%LHV currents 100% 20% nominal value.
